Chief Junior Officer - Latest News!!

Hi Team,

A message from the Chief Junior Officer - John "Kokki" Kostopoulos

We have come a long way. We have built strong working relationships with our external parties, senior team, council, sponsors, FFA & FFV. We are well respected.

We have been praised for many of our works but the area that stands out especially is in the FIRST AID sector. Please join me when I say that SAFETY comes FIRST before WINNING.  Always be alert.

Do not let the score on the board or how important the match is to your child or team CLOUD or COMPROMISE the safety of the child or other children.

Before a game starts make sure that the FIRST AID officer is at hand, supplies. Fully charged phone & first aid stretcher is in position, that the MAIN entrance of the ground is open and there is a clear passage in case of an AMBULANCE arriving.  Make sure there are no strange objects on the ground,  so walk the ground before you start the game.

Know your exit points in case of fire:-

  • Assemble at the car park if a fire is has started at the scouts end or if the trees get on fire at the railway end.
  • Assemble at the scouts end if a fire has started at the junior/senior pavilion end.

Remember that you are a ambassador of the club. It only takes one person to destroy it for all of us. Many hard working hours has already gone into the junior environment to get it to the point it is today.

It is sad when it just takes the one person. Sure,  we have policies in place to deal with that one but it is sad when this happens.

Having said all this, the majority of our whole club are wonderful people, lovely to deal with, excited about the new year and believe in the junior movement.

When we are all together you can say we are one big Oakleigh family. This year will be a challenging one. We must cling together like brothers & sisters.

Listen to the Risk Management & First Aid officer led by Helen Kraloglou in reference to safety & insurance.

Helen Skouteris is leading the way with Council & external parties.  We thank her for her many hours of documentation/work especially taking time of her normal work to attend meetings.

I don’t want to keep saying” if you only knew the mount of work & effort involved in running a junior club”. No money or personal rewards can match it. To lump that thought on you is not fair.

All I ask from you all is to empathize, respect and honor the junior committee at all times.

This is the greatest reward.

John Kostopoulos

Hi Team,

A message from the Chief Junior Officer - John "Kokki" Kostopoulos

Welcome

We take this opportunity to outline briefly our passion not only for soccer, but also for the building of a community aligned with one main vision, and that is to see our kids grow into healthy, active, and socially responsible adult citizens. Oakleigh Cannons Juniors Football Club is located in the South-East Melbourne Suburb of Oakleigh, Victoria. Today, in 2010, the club has over 440 children enrolled and 32 teams in operation from Under 5 (Small Sided Games) to Under 18.

The Junior Committee was committed, focused, and driven to achieve three objectives:

  • To provide the opportunity for boys and girls from 5-18 years of age to participate in soccer and other physical activities;
  • To focus on children’s safety and wellbeing at all times;
  • To build social capital by building trust, social networks, and effective community partnerships.

Over the last 5 years, the committee of Oakleigh Cannons Junior Football Club (OCJFC) has been committed to these three objectives putting in place policies and procedures to move the club’s focus from “winning at all costs” to fostering children’s physical and mental well-being in a supportive, safe, and all-inclusive community-based environment.

An effective leadership team that is based on empowerment, trust, and respect, a Team Support System that builds trust and social networks among the parent volunteers and children in each team, and a systematically-designed curriculum that unites the coaches in their teaching of soccer skills and athletic abilities across all age groups, and an ever vigilant focus on safety and risk management (with every team assigned a fully qualified first aid volunteer parent who is equipped with a first aid bag, supplies and the detailed medical history of each player on the team) have been instrumental in moving OCJFC toward becoming a “model” junior football club.

Both male and female children of diverse ethnic backgrounds and abilities are welcome at OCJFC and afforded the opportunity to develop their physical skills. There is no doubt that OCJFC is building strong people (children and their parents) and fostering a sense of community.

Hi Team,

A message from the Chief Junior Officer - John "Kokki" Kostopoulos

First Aid in Football - Risk Management & Insurance Department (Dept Leader: Helen Kraloglou)

A great day for our club. A moment to cherish. These type of accolades are not just given. It does not just happen. This is not a friend telling a friend to add us to a local newspaper or to give us some time in the media. This moment is real and at the highest. This is hard work over time.

The article did not just happen by accident. We must all stop and understand clearly the valuable role we all play at our club and the way we effect others and how they view us as a club.  We have achieved and made an amazing impact in certain fields. In this case First Aid in Football.

We are forerunners.  Of course... we are not saying we are the best at everything; there is allot of work to do in the coaching/development/finance and other areas of our club, however, let me tell you all this, the work that has been done so far at our club has reached heights that you cannot have imaged. If this is the result we have seen in this area, image for one minute if we prioritised and focused on other areas.... what we could achieve.

People look up at Oakleigh Cannons now. I understand we are all busy people. There is so much happening in our lives. Very difficult to find the time. Family comes first. Though, I plead with you - we must find time to celebrate this achievement.  Helen & the Junior Committee would be the first to say that this is not about them. They do not not want you to email them and say how good they are. We may come up with a million ideas; but if no-one follows, if no-one believes; nothing happens.  You are all part of this success.

We want you to celebrate with us together this moment. If you did not get trained as first aiders, if you did not support Safety & Awareness week, if you did not fill up your first aid bags with supplies, if you did not attend the refresher course, if you did not fill in the incidents reports and follow process, if you did not listen and believe in safety first - this achievement would not have happened.  Read the article. Believe in safety, safety first before winning.

Do not be clouded or confused at training and on game day. Do not be pressured or obstructed. Always check for safety of the kids first. Forget about the game and how important it is to win this one. I prefer to lose the championship or the game that to see 1 kid get injured.  I have said many times before -  "I have seen teams that win 5-0 and think they are the greatest but yet when their kids get injured; they don't even have a first aid bag, or sponge, or a little water for their kids yet they look like a million dollars with their smart and colourful strips and the richest sponsors.

I am so proud of Oakleigh. I have seen and heard of Oakleigh Cannons Junior first aiders running out first to lend a helping hand, to help our opponents kids"  We have set a high standard now.  Stay focused.  Believe in TSS (The Team Support System)
